I've always enjoyed shopping for food, that is when we are not penny pinching and we have enough money to buy everything on our "want" list! I guess it's the Proverbs 31 woman want-to-be in me, but when I come home from shopping at the grocery store with food to fill our fridge and just the right ingredients to create a nice dinner, I feel accomplished! I feel I have played a significant role in providing for our family, and it feels good! Lately, as I have been on the search for grocery stores that sell healthy ingredients I can use to prepare the most delectable, nutritious meals, shopping has become even more fun and exciting. It's been rewarding to shop around for new items and to learn where and "if" I can find the ingredients I'm hoping for. For the most part, I have found exactly what I'm looking for around Seoul, and even more! I will highlight just two grocery stores I have been enjoying lately here in Seoul. One is a grocery store I have always gone to at least once a week, but keep reading and you can learn why I look forward to visiting this one even more so now. The other grocery store is definitely considered overpriced by many, but it's location and high-quality products keep me going back for more! | E-Mart in Yongsan is currently my top "go to" store for finding the most quality products in a short amount of time. They have a cozy, little organic section I feel right at home in! For those that frequent E-mart and other large grocery stores in Seoul, you know how chaotic shopping for the simplest of ingredients can be. From the language barrier to massive crowds, life isn't always peaches and cream for ex-pat city dwellers. But, let me tell you, now that I have decided to "go organic" as soon as I enter the entrance of the bustling E-mart arena, I quickly grab my cart and head directly to the safe zone - the organic get-away! This small nook and cranny has almost everything I'm looking to buy at E-mart, without the hustle and bustle of other shoppers around you . My family has enjoyed their organic milk, yogurt, cereal, veggies, fresh fruits, frozen fruits, maple syrup, soy sauce, and more. Granted you do have to venture out of this pure, solitary area to grab your organic eggs. They are hiding in between the large quantity of eggs E-mart sells. But, don't fear, the word "organic" is written on the carton. So, grab them quickly and head back to the safe zone for more shopping before checking out. |
High Street Market, located just down the street from where we work in Itaewon, is another favorite store I frequently shop at to grab "special" products for those "special" meals! The picture above features one of those foods that my husband and I now love to buy maybe once a week!!! Can you guess which item it is? YES, the steak!!! High Street Market has grass-fed beef, and boy, is it tasty!!! I'm definitely serious on this, you have got to try the grass-fed beef from here if you live near Itaewon! I started buying it because eating organic or grass-fed meat is very important, but now I will continue to go back for more because it is so, so good! You can ask Shawn, I never liked to cook steak in the past, even though it is his favorite food. I could just never find a good, but affordable piece of meat. Now, this grass-fed steak is not cheap, of course, you are paying for high-quality, Australian beef, but it is worth every bite. And we are finding that just two steaks feed our family of five just fine, provided I serve a lot of yummy veggies and rice on the side.
What else does High Street have to offer? Well, they make/prepare lots of in-house/homemade products like tahini, honey, cashew butter, almond butter, almond milk, and more. They have lots of gluten-free products, organic baking goods, dry beans, and canned coconut milk! Not to mention, COCONUT OIL!!! We must know our limits when entering High Street Market, but if you are looking for some quality ingredients and friendly service, stop in and stay a while!
